On $5, the fee is $0.45, 9.0% of the payment. On $1,000, it is 2.93%.

      The formula

How to calculate Stripe fees by hand

      Stripe fee = payment × 2.9% + $0.30
      $50: $50 × 2.9% = $1.45, + $0.30 = $1.75. You receive $48.25.

Add the surcharges to the 2.9% before you multiply: an international card makes it 4.4%, with conversion 5.4%. Billing, Invoicing and Tax are separate percentages of the same payment.

How much to charge to receive a set amount

      Price to ask = (amount you want + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029)
      To receive $100: $100.30 ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. Check: $103.30 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.30, and $103.30 − $3.30 = $100.00.

Stripe rounds each fee to the cent, so the formula can be a cent off. The calculator's Price to ask finds the lowest price that really leaves you the amount, with every surcharge and add-on you ticked.

      Stripe or PayPal

      Stripe vs PayPal fees

For a card payment from a US customer, Stripe costs 2.9% + 30¢ and PayPal Checkout 3.49% + 49¢. On $100, that is $3.20 against $3.98, and the gap grows with every sale: 40 sales of $25 a month cost $41.20 on Stripe and $54.40 with PayPal Checkout.

      • Offer both if you can. Some buyers only pay with PayPal; losing the sale costs more than the fee difference.
      • Without the fixed fee: a PayPal goods and services payment (2.99%, no fixed fee) costs less than Stripe on payments under about $333, where its 0.09% more equals Stripe's 30¢.
      • Large amounts: Stripe ACH (0.8%, max $5) and PayPal Pay by Bank on invoices (1%, max $10) are the cheapest.

See every PayPal method in the PayPal fee calculator.

      Pay less

5 ways to pay lower Stripe fees

      1. Offer ACH for big payments

ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% with a $5 cap: a $2,000 invoice costs $5 instead of $58.30 by card.

      2. Bundle small items

The 30¢ is charged on every payment. One $30 bundle costs $1.17; six $5 payments cost $2.70.

      3. Price in your customer's currency

Charging a customer in their own currency can avoid the 1% conversion, where your account can settle that currency.

      4. Let customers type their own card

A card you type in by hand costs 0.5% more. Send a Payment Link instead.

      5. Don't pay a platform fee on top of Stripe

Some shop builders take a cut before Stripe does. The comparison under the calculator shows the totals.

      FAQ

      Questions about Stripe fees

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

For a US account, Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ for each successful card payment from a US card: on $100 that is $3.20, so you receive $96.80. There are no setup or monthly fees on standard pricing.

What does Stripe charge for international cards?

Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards, and 1% more if the payment needs a currency conversion. On $100 from an international card that is $4.70, or $5.70 with conversion.

How do I calculate Stripe fees?

Multiply the payment by 2.9% and add $0.30: for $50, $50 × 2.9% = $1.45, plus $0.30 = $1.75, so you receive $48.25. Add 1.5% to the rate for an international card, 1% for a conversion, and 0.5% for a card typed in by hand.

How much should I charge to receive a set amount after Stripe fees (reverse calculation)?

Add $0.30 to the amount you want and divide by 0.971: to receive $100, ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. The "Price to ask" button works it out for every Stripe method and surcharge, exact to the cent.

Does Stripe give its fee back when I refund a payment?

No. Stripe keeps its processing fees from the original payment when you refund it. Refunding a card payment costs nothing extra on standard pricing; only refunds by bank transfer may have a fee.

      Who pays the Stripe fee?

The business that receives the payment. Stripe takes its fee out of each payment before the money reaches your bank, so a $100 card payment pays out $96.80. To end up with $100, charge $103.30.

      Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?

For a US card payment, usually yes: $100 costs $3.20 on Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) and $3.98 with PayPal Checkout (3.49% + 49¢). A PayPal goods and services payment (2.99%, no fixed fee) costs less than Stripe on payments under about $333.

What is the Stripe ACH fee?

ACH Direct Debit from a US bank account costs 0.8% with a $5 cap, so any payment above $625 costs exactly $5. For large invoices and subscriptions it is far cheaper than a card.

What do Stripe Billing, Invoicing and Tax cost?

They are added on top of the payment fee: Billing for subscriptions costs 0.7% of billing volume on pay-as-you-go, Invoicing Starter 0.4% per paid invoice, and Stripe Tax Basic 0.5% per transaction where you are registered to collect tax.

What does a Stripe dispute cost?

Stripe charges $15 for each dispute you receive, and another $15 if you counter it by hand, which you get back if you win the dispute.

Is this Stripe fee calculator free, and can I put it on my site?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no ads, and nothing you type leaves your browser. Open "Add this calculator to your site" under the calculator and paste the code into your page.
