How to use the book title generator

  1. Describe your book in one sentence, or type one to three keywords: a place, an object, a feeling or the result your reader wants. The generator picks the keywords out of a sentence for you.
  2. Pick fiction, nonfiction or a series, then a genre card and a tone. Add any words you never want to see.
  3. Press Generate as often as you like: every press gives twelve titles as book covers. Tap a cover to flip it and see its score.
  4. Remix and design: 🔁 turns a title you like into six new ones around its key word, ♡ keeps it on your shelf, and 🎨 opens the cover studio, where you can download the cover as an image.
What works

What makes a good book title

Readers decide in a second, usually from a thumbnail on a phone. The titles that win share five things.

  1. It is short

One to six words reads at thumbnail size and stays in the memory. Let a nonfiction subtitle carry the detail.

  2. It is easy to say

Word of mouth sells books. If people stumble over it or cannot spell it into a search box, they will not find it.

  3. It signals the genre

A thriller sounds tense, a romance sounds warm, a fantasy sounds old and strange. The right signal brings the right readers.

  4. It makes one promise

Fiction promises a mood or a question; nonfiction promises a result. One clear promise beats three vague ones.

  5. It is findable

A title nobody else uses is easier to rank in Amazon and Google. Check your favourite before you commit (see below).

Patterns

Book title patterns that work

Most memorable titles follow a handful of shapes. The generator uses all of them; here they are with made-up examples, so you can try them on your own.

The title + subtitle formula for nonfiction

A nonfiction title gets attention; the subtitle closes the sale by saying exactly what the reader gets. A reliable shape is [short, catchy title]: [the result] + [for whom or how fast].

  • Sourdough Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide to Your First Loaf in One Weekend
  • The Calm Money Plan: How to Save More Without Feeling Broke
  • From Followers to Clients: A Beginner's Guide for New Coaches

Name the result in the reader's words, add a number or a time if it is true, and keep the main title short. If you plan to sell the ebook yourself, the same subtitle becomes the first line of your sales page. See how to sell digital products like ebooks with a 0% fee.

Series

Book series title generator: name the series and its books

Choose Series in the generator and every result is a series name with the titles of its first three books. A series name tells readers the books belong together and is what they search for when they want the next one, so:

  • Name what lasts across every book: the world, the family, the town or the case file.
  • Give the books one shape, such as one word each or "A Summer of…" three times, so they look like a set.
  • Use "Saga" or "Trilogy" sparingly, and not "Trilogy" if a fourth book might follow.
By genre

Book title ideas by genre

Every genre has its own sound. Pick the matching genre in the generator and it uses that sound's words and shapes.

Thriller and mystery

Short, tense, with a secret: witness, alibi, the house. The Quiet Alibi · Room Nine

Science fiction

Cold and vast: signals, stations, protocols. The Last Signal · Drift Protocol

Horror

Quiet dread: hollows, cellars, things that wait. When the Well Waits · The Pale Cellar

Children's books

Playful and concrete: a creature and a problem. The Very Big Pickle · Brave Little Rocket

Ideas

10 ways to come up with a book title

  1. Mine your own pages

Reread your best scenes or chapters and underline striking phrases. A line from the book often makes the strongest title.

  2. Name the central object

The thing the story turns on, or the tool the reader will use, is concrete and easy to picture.

  3. Use the setting

A named place gives a title atmosphere at once.

  4. Ask the story's question

A title that hints at the mystery makes people want the answer.

  5. Promise the result

For nonfiction, say what changes for the reader: the money saved, the skill learned, the habit kept.

  6. Try a pattern

Run your keywords through the patterns above, or let the generator do it twelve at a time.

  7. Borrow your hero's name

A character with a memorable name can carry a title alone.

  8. Flip an expression

Change one word in a familiar phrase so it sounds new but feels known.

  9. Cut it down

Write a long title, then remove every word you can. What is left is usually stronger.

  10. Test it on readers

Share three finalists with your audience or newsletter and let them vote; the winner already has fans.

Can you copyright a book title?

No. In the US, copyright does not protect names, titles or short phrases, so a title alone cannot be copyrighted. A title can sometimes be protected as a trademark, usually for a series or a brand, so a search is still worth five minutes. Source: US Copyright Office FAQ.

How long can a title be on Amazon?

On Amazon KDP the title and subtitle together must be under 200 characters. Source: KDP metadata guidelines, checked 30 October 2026.

A five-minute title check

  • Search it on Amazon and Google: is a book in your genre already using it?
  • Say it out loud and ask someone to spell it.
  • Look at it at thumbnail size on your phone.
  • Check the name is free as a page address and on your social apps; you can claim it as your link in bio.
FAQ

Questions about the book title generator

Is the book title generator free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no limit: press Generate as often as you like and every press gives you twelve new titles, never one you have already seen.

How do I generate a book title using keywords?

Type one to three words that sit at the heart of your book, such as a place, an object or the result a reader wants, then pick fiction or nonfiction and the genre. The generator builds every title around your keywords, so the results are about your book rather than random.

Does it work for nonfiction and ebooks?

Yes. Switch to Nonfiction and choose the kind of book: a how-to guide, business or money, self-help, a cookbook, health and fitness, a workbook or journal, or a memoir. You get a title and a subtitle that says what the reader will get, which is what sells a nonfiction ebook.

Can I use the titles it gives me?

Yes. Titles cannot be protected by copyright in the US, so you are free to use one. A title can sometimes be a trademark, often for a series or a brand, so search Amazon, Google and the trademark register for your favourite before you print it.

How long should a book title be?

Most strong titles are one to six words, short enough to read on a phone-sized thumbnail. On Amazon KDP the title and subtitle together must be under 200 characters. Nonfiction can carry a longer subtitle; the main title should still be short.

Is it a story title generator too?

Yes. Pick Fiction and a genre for short stories, novellas and fan fiction as well as novels. Titles with a strong image and a hint of the conflict work for any length of story.

Does it use AI?

Yes. An AI writes the titles about the words you give it, and every request carries the titles you already saw, so each press is new. If the AI is busy, word lists and title patterns we wrote for each genre answer instead. Please do not type anything private.

Can it name a book series?

Yes. Choose Series and each result is a series name with the titles of its first three books, written to share one pattern so they look like a set. For fantasy series, the fantasy title generator has eight fantasy sub-genres.

What makes a good book title?

A good title is short, easy to say, fits its genre and makes one promise: a mood for fiction, a result for nonfiction. Test your favourites with the title check on this page: it scores length, word count, the genre signal and, for nonfiction, whether the subtitle names the benefit.
